How to get a SIN Number?

Applying for a SIN card is free. However, it could take a while for you to obtain the document depending on your methods.

• • In-person: This is the fastest way to obtain your document. All you have to do is locate your nearest Service Canada Centre and walk in. Sometimes it could be tedious! Based on where you live, you may have to wait long hours standing in a queue. Once you’ve reached the front, you just have to provide the necessary documents, and you can walk out with your SIN card in the next 15 minutes.

• • Through the Mail: You can opt for this method to renew your SIN number or don’t need it immediately. However, this is the slowest method and could take about 25 working days to process your sin number application.

• • Online: This is the most preferred and convenient method. You can apply for a sin number online here. The Canada.ca website will ask you a few questions and, based on your scenario, ask for the relevant documents to be uploaded. Once you’ve confirmed that all your information is correct, it will take up to 10 days for you to receive your document.
