When someone who is already in a legal status in Canada and this status is about to expire and an application for a new permit is made; he/she will be able to remain in the country under implied status. This will allow the individual and his/her family remain in Canada under the conditions of the expired permit until a decision is made on the application.

International Students have many ways to remain in the country after graduation. A first step should be applying for the post- graduation work permit. Gaining work experience in Canada will be key for an international student in order to apply for Permanent Residence later.

The main applicant or sponsored person should be related to the Canadian citizen or permanent resident in one of these ways:

  • Parent or Grandparent
  • Dependent Children
  • Spouse, common law partner or conjugal partner
  • Intended adopted child under 18 years of age
  • Orphaned, unmarried and under 18 years of age brother, sister, nephew, niece or grandchild

Applicants do not become Permanent Residents when their visa is issued. You will become a Canadian Permanent Resident as soon as you enter Canada with a valid passport and the Canadian visa.

You will have to be present in Canada 3 out of the 5 most recent years in order to be eligible for citizenship.
